In Spartacus: Blood and Sand, what is the point of episode 8?

Its showing how Krixus honors the brotherhood by saving Spartacus's life even though they have been enemies from the start. (I think that of itself is hinting towards the possibility of an alliance which we later see in the final episode of season 1..)
