Michael Caine war film where he gets shot at the end?

I'm pretty sure it was Caine, and I think he was dressed up as an italian and gets shot in the back by his own troops thinkin they were Italians and they had white flags too but I can't remember the name or if it was even him, any help appreciated :-) thx
